"I Don't Know About Tomorrow"

Today's Monday Manna
is hosted by Joanne Sher
at An Open Book.
We are focusing on this verse -

"In the day of prosperity be joyful,
but in the day of adversity consider;
surely God has appointed one as well as the other,
so that man can find out nothing that will come after him."
(Ecclesiastes 7:14 NKJV)

The words "good" and "bad" are opinion words - the way we see things from our perspective. Our opinion is swayed by our wishes and comfort. We often don't see the whole picture. What we think will be nice, may actually be a hindrance to our life. We don't know what's best for us.

It's much like a kid with a bag of candy. He may be ecstatic with his wonderful treasure. To him it is a good thing - a great thing! - but his mother knows it is not good for him. He will get sick, and the will rot his teeth. He isn't looking ahead. He only lives for now. He doesn't think it's a good thing when his mother takes all his candy away.

We are often like that. We enjoy the sunny weather or a promotion at work or a sudden increase of attendance at church. Those are good things, right? They probably are, but maybe not. Maybe we need rain, maybe the job takes us away from church, maybe the atmosphere at church becomes shallow and weak.

It's hard for us to be happy if we get sick or lose a job or experience some catastrophe in our life. We say we're having a "bad day," but if those times bring us closer to God or in contact with people who need the Lord, then they are "good" times. Maybe through our hard times we can sympathize better with those we are serving. Everything God does is good FOR us.

his thought reminds me of the book of Jonah. We often end the story when Jonah is thrown up by the whale, and he finally obeys God. But there is more to the story.
Jonah doesn't want the people of Ninevah to repent. He wants God to destroy them. When he sees God's mercy to the Ninevites, Jonah is angry. God reminds him that He is God. He has the right to destroy or bless as He sees fit.

We don't know the future. We don't know what things in our life will prepare us for what is ahead, but God does. We need to take each day as a gift from our Father, who knows what is best for us.

This song tells it well -

"I don't know about tomorrow,
I just live from day to day.
I don't borrow from its sunshine,
For its skies may turn to gray,
And the path that be my portion,
May be through the flame or flood,
But His presence goes before me,
And I'm covered with His blood.
(chorus)
Many things about tomorrow
I don't see to understand,
But I know Who holds tomorrow,
And I know Who holds my hand."

He truly does know what is best for each of us and God loves to be in the details of our lives.

Love that hymn!

Love this perspective, Vonnie. Some of the best times in my life, from this perspective, have come through suffering. And I CAN praise Him for it.
