"First" by Evelyn Bryant
"First"
by
Evelyn Bryant
Guilty of sin, yet forgiven,
I bear the burden no more;
Guilty, unworthy of Heaven,
Yet God did His mercy out-pour
On me, like the dew of the morning,
Falling on flowers that thirst,
His great love surely brings comfort
To my heart where He longs to be first.
First in all of my doings,
First in all I say,
First in all my pursuings,
First in my heart every day.
God grant me the will to listen,
God grant me the will to do
All things in manner pleasing
To Him till this life is through;
Then gladly let me go meet Him,
With joy that seems it must burst,
With love and longing to greet Him,
In the heart where He ever is first.
First in all of my doings,
First in all I say,
First in all my pursuings,
First in my heart every day.

I enjoyed the poem. I'm also glad I scrolled on down and saw the tribute to Evelyn. She sounds like a special lady, indeed. We had a lady like that in our church. When she went to be with the Lord (very suddenly, of a heart attack), it took several people to take over all of her volunteer positions at the church. People like Evelyn (and Ellen) are treasures, and we sure do miss them when their time here is done.
I'm glad your granddaughter shares her name.
Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks, Shelley. It's just sinking in, and I'm realizing all Evelyn was to me.
I love her poems.
