"Nor Thorns Infest the Ground"

This is the last verse of Isaiah 55. I have enjoyed studying and memorizing it verse by verse. Once you memorize a section of Scripture, it becomes part of you and stands out when you hear it read again.

(without looking at my Bible)
Isaiah 55:8-13

8.For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways,
saith the Lord.
9.For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10.For as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it to bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
11.So shall my word be that goeth forth; it shall return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please,
whereto I have sent it.
12.For ye shall go out with joy, and the mountains and hills shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands with joy.

CORRECTIONS:
(looked 3 times, vs.11 "not return", "it shall prosper in the thing"; vs.12 "and be led forth with peace" "before you" with joy )

NEW VERSE
Isaiah 55: 13
"Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up te myrtle tree; and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off."

We just sang "Joy to the World" in our Christmas season. Did you notice the words? This is not really a song about the birth of Christ, but of His second coming to rule the earth. Notice the third stanza:

"No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found..."

When Adam sinned and God sent him from the garden, God also cursed the earth. He told Adam that it would be hard work to grow things in the soil.
(Genesis 3:18) "Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee..."

The whole of nature is restrained by the curse of sin. (Rom. 8:22) "For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now."
I've even heard that the sounds of nature (the wind, gurgling streams, bird calls, etc.) are all in a minor key.

When Jesus comes to reign, the curse will be lifted. (Amos 9:13) "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt."

(a flowering myrtle tree)

Will we hear the mountains singing? Will even the rocks and stars praise His Name?

Blessings instead curses will fill the earth. They will show the power and glory of our Lord in His creation-forever and ever and ever and ever and ever...

Lord, we wait anxiously for that day when You will be King over the earth. Let our hearts be singing your praise even now. Amen
