My Bookshelf

I've always loved books. We didn't have a television when I was growing up- we had books. My parents house if full of book, and so is mine. Books became my friends that traveled wherever I went. I would read them over and over again.

This book, The Little Green Goblin was one my father owned as a child. He knew it so well that he often told the story to my brothers and me. He told it to my children and any other children who would sit still for it. A few years ago, my mother's friend was cleaning out an old house and gave her a box of books. This book was on top! It was the same printing of the one my father had as a child. We were amazed at how accurate he had been all these years. (I'm glad we found a copy of the book, for I wanted to keep passing the story on, but didn't know if I could remember the details as well.)

I've found that children don't read books like they used to. As a school teacher, I read to my students. I praised and rewarded them for reading books. I stocked my classroom with good books. I directed them to more books in the library.

Have you noticed my bookshelf on this blog, on the right sidebar? Isn't it an interesting feature? I've decided to promote great children's literture on it, and I'd like your help.

Which book did you love read to you as a little child?

Which book did you learn to read by yourself?

What was one of your first chapter books?

Which book contained your favorite character?

What would you recommend to a ten year old boy?

How about a ten year old girl?

I'd love to hear from you. I may even put your book on my shelf.

I LOVE children's books! Our house has lots of bookshelves devoted to kids books - and some that are touch-by-permission only.

A few of my childhood favorites are:

A Bag Full of Nothing by Jay Williams (actually, anything by Jay Williams)

Mrs. Tibbett's Typewriter by Eve Merriam

Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan

Behold Your Queen by Gladys Malvern (I fell in love with this one around age 10)

Now if we're talking modern favorites, I still have a growing list...

Thank you, Val! I've only read "Sarah, Plain and Tall", but the others sound interesting. I'll have to check them out!

I don't remember the first book I read by my self - I must have read millions since that day. My favorite chapter books included the Little House series - I read those books so many times the covers fell off. I still have them in my attic. Another favorite I read over and over (and still have) was "No Flying in the House" by Betty Brock, a fantasy / mystery about a girl who discovers she is half-fairy. My favorite "Little Golden Book" as a tiny child was "The Color Kittens" by Margaret Wise Brown.

Thanks, Cat...I hadn't heard of the last two books, but they sound good.
