"Don't be Surprised"

My goal for this year is to memorize John 15. I divided it into two parts, and we have complete the first part; verses 1-17. Each week I will "recite" what we have learned and add one more verse.

(without looking at my Bible)
John 15: 18,19
18. If the world hateth you,
you know that it hated me
before it hateth you.
19. If ye were of the world,
the world would love his own;
but ye are not of the world,
for I have chosen you out of the world,
therefore the world hateth you."

CORRECTIONS: vs.18 "hated", vs.19 "because", "but I"

NEW VERSE

John 15:20
"Remember the word that I said unto you.
The servant is not greater than his lord.
If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you;
if they have kept my sayings,
they will keep yours also."

Jesus is reminding his disciple of the fact that they are associated with Him. However people think of Jesus, they will think the same way of those that follow Him.

We shouldn't be surprised at this. This is human nature. We can't expect them to act any different. We should pray for them and be kind to them. Anger and retaliation will not win them for Christ. A meek and gentle spirit will disarm them.

My father taught me and my brothers to state what you know is right, then close your mouth. Your opponent cannot argue with silence. Also, the more you talk, the more chance you have to hurt your standing by a slip of the tongue. It's best to just be quiet and let your silence be your strength.

If you must speak, let your words be few and well chosen. They will be remembered longer, whether the listener agrees or not.

Lord, we are not ashamed to be called one of your disciples. It is not always easy, but you told us that it wouldn't. Give us Your strength and gentleness. Give us Your wisdom to speak the words that are true and right. In Jesus' Name, Amen

Incredible wisdom on a not-so-easy subject. I struggle with this, but I always appreciate the admonishment to sharpen me.

I like your dad's advice, Vonnie. That is a wise Dad! I wish I could keep my mouth shut more often...I need to work on that!
