Bible Characters: Elisabeth

I had been going through the Old Testament in my Bible study, but I think I will move to the life of Christ for a few months, and I will return to the longer parade of interesting Old Testament characters after Easter.

Elisabeth was the wife of a priest, Zacharias. The Bible says, "And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless." (Luke 1:6 KJV)She lived her life to please the Lord the best that she knew how. Isn't that all He asks?

Zacharias was struck dumb when he doubted the message that they would bear a son in their old age. He must have told Elisabeth somehow what the angel said, "I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and show thee these glad tidings."

Wow...an angel, with a message from God!

Elisabeth, who had yearned for years for a child and finally given up hope, would have a miracle child, with a special job. "He shall be great in the sight of the Lord ...and shall be filled with the Holy Ghost... to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

A king needed a herald to open the way, to ready the people to greet him. Her child would be the herald of the King of Kings!

Lord, help us to be like Elisabeth, wanting to please You, wanting to be used of You. May we wait patiently for the job You give us to do and do it joyfully, as a privilege to serve our King. Amen.
