This last week, I had a glorious time helping my son and his wife with their newborn, but I didn't get a lot of sleep. My son works nights, and my daughter-in-law is an evening person. So, I often didn't get to bed until after midnight. Then in the mornings, I watched the baby so they could get some rest. After a week of this, my mind was quite fuzzy.
I watched the little newborn snoozing away and thought of the beauty of sleep. It rejuvenates our mind and bodies. Without it, we become cranky and sick. They (whoever "they" are)...they say that children grow while they sleep. If we are anxious or excited, it eludes us.
That newborn has complete trust in his father and mother. He has peace that all his needs will be taken care of. Sleep is often associated with peace. A person that is not worried can lie down and rest. He does not feel threatened, but secure. He knows that all is well.
If our life is full of worry and fear, we lose spiritual "sleep". We become fretful and worried over the future. Our minds become "fuzzy" not seeing what God wants us to see: sin in our lives or opportunities to serve Him. Our attitude becomes irritated and grouchy, and we lose our patience quickly. We become restless, trying one activity or another...trying to "stay awake", but we don't need to stay awake; we need to rest. We need to trust in God's sovereign will for our lives. All's well, because He is in control.
God tell us to rest, to trust in Him. He will give us peace. There is no need to fear. (In fact, there are 365 places in the Bible where we are told not to fear.) Why should anything frighten us, when our Father is in control?
Isaiah 26:3
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Philippians 4:6,7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Lord, teach us to trust, to rest, to sleep. Give us Your peace. Amen
I could not hear
His voice in the hurried
Rush of the day.
With frets and fear
Pushing to the front of
The wild fray.
Buzzers and gears
Clanging, honking, roaring
In frenzied array.
I could not hear
His voice in the hurried
Rush of the day
When moonlight clear-
Ly bathes the world with calm
Soothing sweet saches,
Gentle woodland deer
Feed in quiet pastures
Near their Shepherd stay.
I could now hear
His whispers in the quiet
Hush of the day.

So this is why I am a "light" sleeper?!
This is really great, Vonnie, and SO TRUE! God-inspired wisdom here and as always, a good reminder for this wandering soul. Love you!
Good insights. I like that poem, and what a precious, peaceful photo of your grandson! Sunny
What a gorgeous baby! I'm feeling sleep deprived today, myself, so I related completely to your thoughts.
